METADATA ONLY

Free DPI converter

Set a JPEG or PNG to 72, 150, 300 or 600 DPI. To change DPI to 300, or convert a picture to 300 DPI, choose that preset and download. The pixels stay the same; only the density metadata changes. Your image stays in this browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

Choose a JPEG or PNG to set its DPI. The preview is the original picture.

HOW TO

Change DPI without recompressing the photo.

  1. 01

    Choose a JPEG or PNG

This image DPI converter reads the file locally. WebP is not offered here because a metadata-only write would not be reliable.

  2. 02

    Pick 72, 150, 300 or 600

300 DPI is the usual print preset. The 600 DPI converter preset is there when the pixel count already supports fine type or art. You can also enter a custom whole-number DPI from 1 to 1200.

  3. 03

    Download the same pixels

JPEG density is written to JFIF and to EXIF. PNG density is written to the pHYs chunk and, when present, to the embedded EXIF chunk. The compressed image data is not re-encoded.

BEFORE YOU RELY ON IT

What the numbers do and do not change.

Change DPI to 300

A 300 DPI label tells a print layout how large to draw the existing pixels. It does not add pixels. A 1200 × 1800 photo at 300 DPI prints at about 4 × 6 inches. The same file at 72 DPI prints much larger and looks softer because the dots are spread out. You can increase the DPI of an image for free here; the picture itself does not get sharper.

What this DPI converter edits

JPEG files get a JFIF density in inches. If EXIF already stores XResolution, YResolution and ResolutionUnit, those tags are updated too; missing resolution tags are added when the EXIF segment has room. PNG files get a pHYs chunk in pixels per metre. If the PNG also stores resolution in an EXIF chunk, that value is updated to the same DPI. The image samples themselves are copied through unchanged.

When DPI is the wrong fix

If a picture looks soft, blocky or too small on screen, changing the DPI will not repair it. Upscale the photo when you need more pixels, or try unblur when the problem is mild softness rather than print math.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Common questions

Does changing DPI to 300 make an image sharper?

No. A DPI converter changes the print-density label. Sharpness and file size stay the same unless you separately resize or enhance the pixels.

Will this recompress my JPEG?

No. The tool rewrites JFIF and EXIF density fields and leaves the compressed scan data in place. PNG files gain or update a pHYs chunk, and an existing PNG EXIF resolution is set to the same DPI.

Which DPI should I use?

72 DPI is a common screen default, 150 DPI is a reasonable draft, 300 DPI is the usual photo-print target, and 600 DPI is for small type or fine art when the pixel count already supports it.

Can I change DPI to 300 without Photoshop?

Yes. Choose a JPEG or PNG, select 300, and download. You do not need an account, and the image is not uploaded.

Can I increase the DPI of an image for free?

Yes. This free image DPI converter includes a 300 DPI converter preset and a 600 DPI converter preset. Convert a picture to 300 DPI and download it locally. Raising the label makes the printed sheet smaller. It does not add pixels.

Why do width and height stay the same?

DPI does not describe the pixel grid. A 300 DPI file and a 72 DPI file can have identical pixels and look different only when software converts those pixels into inches.
